International Programs
FIJI
One of the key objectives for the Rotary Club of Mont Albert & Surrey Hills in 2008/2009 was to develop an International Volunteering Project which provided all members and their families who dreamed of experiencing international volunteering with the opportunity to fulfil their dream and explore new horizons. The project, affectionately known as “Our Fiji Adventure” had a clear focus that the project meet a defined need in the village and provide all involved both from Australia and Fiji to share their desires for the world to be a better place and provide a framework for advancing international understanding between our nations and promote goodwill and peace.
The Project in the village of Nabukeru on Yasawa-i-rara in the Northern Yasawa Islands involved living with the local villagers and working together as partners in establishing the Village Store and improving the Telecommunications bure (building). The need for the project was critical and essential for the standard of health and wellbeing within the village community.
With the extensive number of villages throughout the Yasawa Islands, there are so many needs. This project has met the very real needs of the 130 members of the Nabukeru Village. This solution provided an excellent outcome and provides for self-management from here on and we look forward to hearing and in future seeing, the ongoing success of the shop for the village.
BRENDA BOOKS
Millions of children suffer from HIV / AIDS in South Africa and are living in HIV affected families and communities throughout the country. This project was a wonderful example of what can be achieved when multiple Rotary Club’s collaborate. The Rotary Club of MASH joined with the Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset in South Africa and five other Australian clubs to bring this project to fruition.
The project involved providing all Year 1 Primary School children in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, and the surrounding rural areas with their own copy of the “Brenda Book” which they can read to their families in order to educate people on living with HIV/AIDS.
Highlights of the project:
• Over $US32,000 raised by working together in Rotary!
• 7,400 books distributed
• Printed in three languages—Xhosa,English & Afrikaans.
